ராம லக்ஷ்மணர்களை முதன் முதலில் ஆஞ்சநேயர் சந்தித்தபோது, ஆஞ்சநேயர் தன்னை சுக்ரீவ மகாராஜாவின் மந்திரியாக தன்னை அறிமுகப் படுத்திக் கொண்டதால், ராமர் தங்களது வ்ருத்தாந்தத்தை லக்ஷ்மணன் வாயிலாக உரைத்தார். அதே மாதிரி என்னிடம் நடந்துகொள்ளாதே என்று தியாகராஜர் கூறுகிறார். அந்த நாளிலேயே சம்பிரதாயம் அல்லது மரபு ( Protocol / Diplomacy) அனுஷ்டிக்கப் பட்டுள்ளது.

Are you sure there is no word in Tamil for diplomacy ? There has to be one right... (Is it probably because us Tamilians either don't know diplomacy or we take it for granted :D )

ReplyDeleteAs I understand it, a protocol is a code prescribing the correct etiquette and precedence in specific circumstances. Protocols are very well established in diplomacy but they are *not one and the same*. "SampradAyam" and "marabu" both clearly refer to tradition, while "marabuccIrmuRai" means 'protocol'.
ReplyDelete"VazhakkappaDi" means "that which is in practice" (hence referring to the word tradition once again). Vatsa, to answer your question, the word diplomacy is usually contextual in tamizh. According to the lexicon the tamizh word that comes closest to 'diplomacy' is "uRavANmai" (although ANDAL insists on the term "sAmam").
